It's been all good news outside of the racetrack this season for Cade Dillard, but inside the guardrails it's been an up and down season, with more downs than desired it seems.
This past weekend, Dillard took his No. 97 Snickers-sponsored Hughes Racing Chassis USMTS Modified into Iowa and Minnesota for five nights of racing in the Hunt for the USTMS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental.
It started off well on Wednesday at the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa, where he flew from 13th on the starting grid to second in the main event by the halfway point. But when the car jumped out of gear and forced him up and over the cushion, he was forced to tag the rear of the field, eventually clawing his way back for a seventh-place finish.
Thursday at the Fairmont Raceway in Fairmont, Minn., it was more mechanical problems as he was able to finish just a single lap in the feature race. Friday's race at the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn., netted a 19th-place finish with just 20 of the 40 laps completed after Dillard was caught up in a crash at the halfway point.
Back at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., on Saturday, things looked to be turning around with a second row start for the main event and 40 laps to get the job done. Unfortunately, another driver banged into Dillard in the first corner on lap 8, forcing Dillard to spin and then retire from the race.
Sunday at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa, the team was back at the track where a late caution stole a sure victory away when they last visited over the Memorial Day Weekend. This time, however, Dillard was able to complete just 24 of the 35-lap distance due to mechanical problems once again.
"If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any," Dillard said following the Cresco event. "Basically sums up my year."
