Finished 2nd in Main EventLucas and the Mike Wedelstadt Racing team competed at the Jackson Motor Speedway in Byram, Miss., on March 9 in the season opener for the USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup. After winning the fourth heat race, “Cool Hand Luke” started the main event from the 6th spot and battled with leader Lucas Lee for the first half of the race. With eight laps to go, Zack VanderBeek got by Lucas for second and eventually was declared the winner when Lee was disqualified, giving Lucas the runner-up finish. The team heads for a Saturday night showdown at the Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, Miss.

9th Annual Summit Racing Equipment USMTS Winter Speedweeks
Finished 5th in Main EventThe fifth round of Summit USMTS Winter Speedweeks took place Saturday night at the Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, Miss., with 43 entries on hand. Lucas finished 2nd in his heat race after starting 5th, which placed him 7th on the grid for the main event. He finished 5th in the caution-free 40-lap feature. The next event on deck for "Cool Hand Luke" and the Mike Wedelstadt Racing team is the King of America VIII presented by Summit Racing Equipment on Thursday-Saturday, March 15-17, at the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan.

The King of America VIII Modified Nationals presented by Summit took place at the Humboldt Speedway on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 15-17, with 84 cars and drivers signed in for battle over the three nights. In Thursday's USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup points race, Lucas raced from 4th to 2nd in his heat race and then won his "B" Main to start 13th in th main event, but mechanical troubles bit the team and he dropped out after 13 laps. On Friday, each driver competed in two heat races to set the fields for Saturday. From 3rd, he finished 2nd in his first heat and then started 9th and won his second heat with a dramatic last-corner pass, leaving him 2nd in passing points. On Saturday, "Cool Hand Luke" was untouchable. Read all about it here. The USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup is back in action on Friday and Saturday, April 13-14, with the first-ever event in the Copper State at the Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Ariz.

The team trekked to Peoria, Ariz., this week for some USMTS action at the Canyon Speedway Park. After a rough heat race, Luke won his "B" Main and then raced from 14th to 8th in the main event. On Saturday, another tough heat landed "Cool Hand Luke" in a B-Main, and another B-Main win set him up for the 13th starting spot in the main event. He came on early, moving up to sixth in just eight laps, and then held strong for a fourth-place finish.

Lucas and the Mike Wedelstadt Racing team competed in the Rancho Milagro Short Track Shootout, April 20-22, at the Southern New Mexico Speedway. On Friday, "Cool Hand Luke" won his heat race from the pole and then hung on for a 5th-place finish in the main event. Mechanical woes hampered Saturday's effort. After using a provisional, Lucas started 23rd and finished 15th in the main event. On Sunday, he roared from 9th to 2nd in his heat and then started and finished 4th in the feature race. Over the weekend, the team picked up contingency awards from Champ Pans, Eibach, Jerovetz Motorsports, Simpson and Sybesma Graphics. They now head for the West Texas Raceway on Friday, April 27.

Finished 19th in Main EventOn the heels of his win on Friday, Lucas suffered an eighth-place finish in his heat race Saturday at the Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas. He went from 14th to ninth in his "B" Main, but needed to burn a provisional to take the 23rd starting spot in the "A" Main. Mechanical troubles, however, knocked the team out with 11 laps complete, resulting in a 19th-place finish.

Finished 1st in Main EventAfter rain canceled Friday’s USMTS show at the I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., Lucas traveled to the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., for an opportunity to drive an MB Custom for Tyler Wolff and Lobo Racing. With some good fortune, and after a hard-fought race with Darron Fuqua, Lucas was able to come out with a win.

Finished 22nd in Main EventThe team headed to the Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Okla., on Saturday night for another round of USMTS action. Lucas went from eight to fourth in his heat race which left him in a “B” Main where he finished second to earn the 15th starting spot in the “A” Main. Working his way to the front, mechanical problems struck at the halfway point of the 40-lapper and the No. 69 MB Custom headed to the trailer with a 22nd-place result.

Finished 5th in Main EventOn Sunday, the road took the Mike Wedelstadt Racing crew to the Creek County Speedway in Kellyville, Okla., for a big USMTS show put on by USMTS racer Joe Duvall. With $100 to lead each lap of the feature, Lucas was in the perfect spot come feature time with the pole position. After leading the first 28 laps on the quarter-mile bullring, Stormy Scott got around the No. 69 machine and led the rest of the 40-lap distance. “Cool Hand Luke” slipped to fifth by the end of the race, but collected $3,690 which included $2,900 in lap leader bonus money. We have the weekend off next week, so we are excited to be back in Minnesota and get ready for more USMTS racing on May 18 at the l-94 Speedway in Fergus Falls.

North Star Nationals - USRA Modifieds
Finished 2nd in Main EventWith the USMTS events rained out for the weekend, Lucas and the team headed for the Deer Creek Speedway for some USRA Modified action. After racing from fourth to second in his heat race, "Cool Hand Luke" rolled off from the fifth spot in the "A" Main. After chasing Dustin Sorensen the entire distance, Lucas settled for a runner-up paycheck.

16th Annual USMTS Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge
Finished 2nd in Main EventDustin Sorensen held off Lucas at the checkered flag in a repeat finish of last Saturday’s USRA Modified feature at 'The Creek.' Lucas was able to challenge after a late-race caution, and got alongside the leader on a couple of occasions, but Sorensen held the high groove and drove to the win while Lucas held on for a solid runner-up paycheck.

2nd Annual Modified Masters took place June 14-16 at the Cedar Lake Speedway with $40,000 up for grabs to the winner. In Thursday's USMTS Hunt for the Casey's Cup action, Luke drove his No. 69 Mike Wedelstadt Racing MB Customs Modified to a 14th-place finish after starting 21st. After two heats of qualifying on Friday, he sat 22nd in points. He raced his way through a "B" Main on Saturday and started 19th in the main event. The victim of a couple on-track mishaps, he finally retired from the race 17 laps from the finish and took home a 15th-place paycheck.

Finished 19th in Main EventThe MWR team moved north to the Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen, S.D., on Friday for the second of three USMTS shows this weekend. Luke charged from 3rd to 2nd in his heat race to lock himself into the redraw for the 40-lap feature. After starting on the outside of the front row, mechanical trouble struck on lap 23 and knocked the No. 69 out of the race.

Finished 8th in Main EventCool Hand Luke and the MWR team wrapped up the tripleheader USMTS weekend Saturday at the Devils Lake Speedway in Crary, N.D. Lucas powered from the 6th starting spot to win his heat and earn the most passing points in the field. Unfortunately, he drew the 8th starting spot for the main event (although that did pay $100 from RHRSwag.com). After 40 hard fought laps, he finished right where he started in 8th.
